How to use the pilot material
Welcome to this pilot. You will be trialling a digital solution for teaching English that gives you the flexibility to choose how you want to teach. Our material can be used to teach students in a classroom, or to teach students remotely, or a combination of teaching in a classroom and teaching remotely. Our platform gives you and your students complete access to everything you need online – there are no print components. You can log in to all content online, anytime, anywhere.

How do I teach the Classroom Lessons?
- When you have created a class, you will see your class name in pink text on your Home screen. In this example, the class name is B1 class.
- Select your class name (e.g. B1 class). A screen will appear with a menu on the left which shows you the course materials available for this class.
- Whenever you sign in, the Student Lesson practice activities will always be selected by default. When you teach your students, make sure you select the Classroom Lesson activities (not the Student Lesson activities). The green highlighted buttons in the left-hand menu will show you whether you are accessing the Classroom Lesson activities or the Student Lesson activities.
- Select the Classroom Lesson from the menu on the left. (The Classroom Lesson button will turn green when you select it.)

- Select the unit number to see the complete list of Classroom Lesson activities in the unit.
- Scroll down the list to select the first lesson activity that you plan to teach. The Classroom Lesson activity screen will appear.
- Each screen has been designed so that it is easy to teach. You can check answers automatically on each screen. Suggested answers are displayed one by one, or in full.
- For listening activities, you can show or hide the audio script.
- For video activities, you can show or hide subtitles.
- The pink buttons at the top of the screen will take you to the previous or the next activity in the unit. The Back button will take you to back to the list of units (select the unit number to see all the activities).
- Before your lesson, select Teacher Resources in the left-hand menu, then select Screen notes to help you prepare. There are teaching notes for each Classroom Lesson screen. Scroll down to find the notes for the activities which you plan to teach. If you plan to teach your class remotely, read the Tips for Teaching Remotely in the Introduction.
- While you are teaching, you may want to use a separate device such as a mobile phone or a tablet to access the Screen notes, rather than your laptop, as you will be sharing your laptop screen with your students during the class. The Screen notes are designed to be easy to read on a mobile screen, and you can sign in to the pilot on multiple different devices at the same time.
- As the teacher, you are completely in charge of showing the Classroom Lessons to students. If you are teaching face-to-face in a classroom, you can show students the Classroom Lessons on your laptop via the projector. If you are teaching remotely, you can show students the Classroom Lessons when you share your screen. During class, your students will need to answer questions orally or use a notepad to write down notes on new language. Your students will not need to sign in to the pilot website during class. Your students will only need to sign in to the pilot website when they access the Student Lessons to do their homework.
How do I set homework?
For each of the Classroom Lessons, there are corresponding practice activities in the Student Lessons which can be set as homework. These practice activities consolidate what students have learned in the Classroom Lessons. They are designed for students to access on their own, outside class, to encourage autonomous learning.
When students are enrolled in a class, they will get access to all the Student Lesson practice activities by default.
- To view the content of the Student Lesson activities, select Home, then Preview, then Student Lesson.
You have a choice about how you set homework for students:
- Option 1: You can simply tell students the numbers of the Student Lesson activities that you want them to complete for homework. By default, students can access all the activities when they log in, so they will just need to note down the numbers of the activities that you set for homework.
- Option 2: You can hide some of the activities in the Student Lessons so that when students log in, they can only see the activities that you want them to complete for homework. This enables you to control which activities students see.
- Option 3: You can set times for when activities in the Student Lessons are available to students. This enables you to control which activities students see and when they can see them.
How do I hide Student Lesson activities from students?
- From the Home screen, select your class name (e.g. B1 class).
- Select Student Lesson from the menu on the left. (The Student Lesson button will turn green when you select it.)
- Select the pink padlock icon at the top right of the screen.
- A screen will appear which lists the contents of the Student Lessons, with toggle buttons on the right. By default, the Student Lessons are available to students when they log in. When the toggle buttons are grey, this means the Student Lesson activities will be available to students.
- You can select a section heading to see a list of individual activities in each section.
- You can choose to hide whole units, or sections of units, or individual activities in the Student Lessons.
- Select the toggle button on the right to hide the sections (or activities) that you don’t want students to see. When a section is hidden, the toggle button turns green.
- Select Save.
- In this example, when students log in, they will only be able to see the Student Lesson activities for the Unit Overview and Consider the Topic sections. Students will not be able to see the Student Lesson activities for the Watch and Listen, Listening Skill or Listen sections.
How do I make Student Lesson activities available to students for a fixed time period?
- You can also choose to make units, sections, or activities in the Student Lessons available for a fixed time period.
- To do this, first hide the sections (or activities), so that the toggle button turns green. Then use the calendar and the clock to set a date and time for the activity to be available to students, then select Save. The activity will only be available to students between the open and close dates and times.
- In this example, students will only be able to see the Student Lesson activities for Watch and Listen between 10:00 on March 10th and 17:30 on March 17th.
How do I mark assignments?
- From the Home screen, select your class name (e.g. B1 class).
- Select Student Lesson from the menu on the left. (The Student Lesson button will turn green when you select it.)
- Select Student.
- Select a student name from the list on the left.
- Find the assignments that are marked as Submitted.
- Choose the activity and listen to or read the student’s answer.
- Provide a score and feedback and click Send.
What is available to my students when they sign in?
When your students are enrolled in a class, they will have access to:
- Student Lesson practice activities to complete on their own, outside of class
- Student Resources language reference, wordlists, and videos
- Students will have access to all the Student Lessons when they log in unless you have hidden any of the activities or unless you have made any of the activities available for a fixed time period.
- Your students will not see the Classroom Lessons when they log in – only you as the teacher have access to these. Your students will only see the Classroom Lessons when you show these using a projector in a classroom, or when you share your screen using screen sharing software if you are teaching remotely.
